Project Overview
Our works involved the civil and structural design and build of a number of new concrete plinths to support the re-powering of a section of the site from 26 x 500kW diesel generators to 14 x 1MW gas-powered generators.
This significant upgrade increased the site’s generation capacity while transitioning to cleaner gas-powered technology, demonstrating the energy sector’s commitment to reducing environmental impact.
Working Within Constraints
The project presented unique challenges as all works were undertaken within the confines of an existing, operational generation site. This required:
- Careful coordination with ongoing site operations
- Phased demolition and construction programme
- Maintaining safe access throughout the works
- Minimising disruption to existing infrastructure
Innovative Demolition Approach
We undertook the demolition of 26 reinforced concrete plinths using robotic demolition equipment, providing a safer and more efficient method for working in the confined site conditions.
Conveyor Belt Extraction System
The arisings from the demolition works were extracted using a conveyor belt system, allowing for:
- Efficient material handling in restricted spaces
- Reduced vehicle movements on site
- Improved safety by separating demolition and extraction activities
- Better control of dust and debris
Sustainable Achievement
100% of waste generated on this project was recycled and processed in the immediate local area.
This outstanding environmental performance reflects our commitment to sustainable construction practices:
- All concrete was crushed and recycled as aggregate
- Steel reinforcement was separated and sent for recycling
- Local processing reduced transport emissions
- Zero waste sent to landfill
Construction Phase
Following demolition and ground reprofiling, we constructed the new reinforced concrete plinths to support the upgraded gas-powered generators. The new foundations were designed to accommodate the different load characteristics and connection requirements of the 1MW gas units.
Key Achievements
- Successful demolition of 26 existing concrete plinths
- Construction of new plinths for 14 x 1MW generators
- 100% waste recycling achieved
- Zero incidents throughout the project
- Minimal disruption to existing site operations
- Local waste processing supporting the community
