Project Overview
As the appointed Civils Subcontractor, Hayward played a pivotal role in this prestigious project, involving the construction of a 20MW battery storage facility within a large water treatment works on behalf of the HV Electrical Subcontractor.
The intricate nature of the work demanded meticulous planning and coordination among various key stakeholders, including the site owner – a major water company. The project required strict adherence to rules and procedures, with compliance to the BESS Principal Contractor’s stringent Quality, Environmental, Health & Safety requirements being essential due to the work being performed adjacent to live treatment areas.
Challenges and Triumphs
The DNO cable route was successfully installed across challenging terrain, overcoming various obstacles. These challenges included:
- Ecological Concerns – Potential presence of protected species requiring careful site management and coordination with ecological consultants
- Arboricultural Concerns – Protected trees and root zones necessitating specialist approaches to preserve existing vegetation
- Operational Constraints – Most of the cable route passed through an easement within the water treatment site and alongside live, often unmapped, assets
Our team worked closely with all stakeholders to navigate these challenges while maintaining project momentum and ensuring full regulatory compliance.
Performance and Execution
Hayward’s team of multi-disciplined, skilled workers operated safely and efficiently to execute a complex work schedule which relied on “just in time” deliveries from multiple suppliers.
Our scope of works included:
- Offloading, assembly and installation of galvanised steel substructure

Adaptability to Changes
The project encountered several design changes throughout its lifecycle, prompting regular planning meetings and rescheduling of key tasks to align with the critical path.
Despite these challenges, the team seamlessly managed the adjustments, providing the client and principal contractor with regular updates through Hayward’s standardised reporting systems. This transparent approach ensured all parties remained informed and aligned throughout the project duration.
